On criteria for becoming and being an NGSLT student =================================================== 1. From minutes of the last board meeting: a. "It was understood that in addition to PhD students having an official status with a supervisor, the NGSLT should also accept and refund research oriented Master's level students who have a supervisor to recommend them. This principle is necessary because in several of the participating countries, there is no PhD programme for language technology, and not even a formal discipline under that name." b. "The board also discussed whether researchers who have already completed a PhD degree would be eligible to the NGSLT courses. It was understood that they may apply and be accepted but not refunded for their expenses." 2. Suggestion regarding (1a): Master's level students should not be accepted for Sweden and Finland, both countries having PhD programmes and graduate schools for language technology. 3. NGSLT student status is separated from course applications. As long as students meet the requirements in (1a), they are welcome to apply for NGSLT student status independently of whether they simultaneously apply to NGSLT courses. It is desirable to have many qualified students associated with the school. 4. There will be a separate form to fill out for becoming an NGSLT student (and a similar form for supervisors, with the supervisor recommending the student to NGSLT), and another form for the application to courses. Course application requires application for NGSLT student status, but not the other way around. 5. A student can be accepted to an NGSLT course if she fulfills the requirements on becoming an NGSLT student in (1) and also fulfills the prerequisites for the course in question. 6. If a student fulfills the requirements on being an NGSLT student and also the course prerequisites, she should be eligible to receive funding. If there are more applications for funding than the budget allows, decision criteria are needed. 7. When students apply to courses they give the courses they want to take in order of preference, and also indicate whether they require funding or not. 8. Finnish KIT-GS students are not reimbursed for (KIT) courses in Finland, and Swedish GSLT students are not reimbursed for (GSLT) courses in Sweden. 9. Students remain NGSLT students until they complete their degree, or until they wish to withdraw from NGSLT. 10. For information: a. 59 students received NGSLT student status during 2004 7 from Denmark 5 from Estonia 8 from Finland 4 from Iceland 4 from Lithuania 4 from Latvia 6 from Norway 4 from Russia 17 from Sweden b. In 2005 the school has so far gained four new students through course applications, and a number of new students through participation in Nodalida. c. Each country has selected a student representative. The students will in addition select two student representatives for the school during the student meeting.
